Welcome to the 5th
University-Community Engagement Conference – UCEC2017

University-Community Engagement goes beyond mere outreach, as universities seek mutually beneficial relationships with communities to address community issues and needs with a commitment to sharing and reciprocity which embraces two-way partnerships.
UCEC is the biennial conference promoted by the Asia-Pacific University-Community Engagement Network (APUCEN) and co-hosted by their members. This is the first UCEC to be held in Japan.

Greetings

Kyoto University of Foreign Studies is delighted to be hosting the 5th University Community Engagement Conference, the first UCEC to be held in Japan.

The theme of this year’s UCEC is ‘Navigating Community Engagement: Charting a Course for the 21st Century.’ We look forward to welcoming scholars from Japan and overseas to Kyoto to share knowledge and expertise, while considering how University-Community Engagement should move forward in the 21st Century to enable the resources at universities to be used in partnership with relevant communities that address urgent societal issues.

We are delighted to have two distinguished speakers to deliver Keynote Addresses: Professor Datuk Dr. Asma Binti Ismail, Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Sains Malaysia, and Dr. Yasushi Akashi, Chairman of The International House of Japan and Former Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations.

The conference will be held in the internationally famous city of Kyoto. As well as the conference, you will be able to enjoy some of the many things that Kyoto has to offer, from ancient temples and shrines to sumptuous food.

We look forward to welcoming you to the conference in September.

  4. To enhance networking, and the sharing of experiences among educators, communities, as well as social development practitioners, and to highlight best-practice cases of various types of university-community engagement.
